Psychodynamic psychotherapy

Several studies have shown that psychodynamic treatment has a lasting effect beyond symptom relief alone, and that positive changes continue after treatment has ended.

Some of those who come to me are primarily looking for personal growth and self-knowledge. Many find they have negative patterns they want to work their way out of. Others have symptoms to a greater or lesser degree, such as anxiety, depression or obsessive difficulties. Some suffer from neuroses or personality disorders.

As a therapist I remain relatively anonymous, so that there is as much room as possible for your material. The neutrality of the therapist matters. This does not mean that I withhold feedback when I sense that you need it. But the therapy room is entirely yours. We work with what occupies you, where you are. I consider it important to give your inner resources free rein. There is nothing that cannot be spoken about. I am bound by full confidentiality.

In our conversations we try to explore and understand your life, your feelings, thoughts and fantasies. I also like to work with dreams.

Psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy is based on psychoanalytic thinking. Many misunderstand this to mean that "it is only about childhood". Experiences throughout life of course shape us too. I am interested in childhood to the extent that it helps us understand how it has formed you, and how it manifests here and now - in your life and in your relationships.

Sometimes we have had to adapt in ways that leave us with inner conflicts. At other times we did not get what we needed. Defence mechanisms that were once useful may have passed their expiry date. As human beings, a great deal of what has shaped us is unconscious, which means we genuinely know nothing about it. Such a psychotherapy is therefore often a voyage of discovery, for better and for worse.

Working through entrenched patterns that limit our freedom and development releases energy and gives us a greater chance of a good life. Through such work you will gain more understanding of yourself, and both mental and emotional insight into your life, your difficulties and your resources - so that you stand more securely and more freely.
